4 Alternative forms of tourism in Zagori

An area rich in both environmental and cultural and historical resources, Zagori meets all the conditions required for the development of alternative and thematic tourism. With proper tourist and hotel infrastructure, Zagori can host and cover the "wants" of many visitors.

You can do sightseeing and hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and rafting, geotourism, speleology, botany, bird and other animal sightings, cultural tourism and ecotourism, agritourism, various museums, as well as religious tourism.

We chose our 4 favorites and present them below:

1. Fly Fishing:

Fly fishing is essentially fishing with a rod or butterfly. Mainly known abroad and especially in Europe. Zagori is among the most ideal for this sport - always in the places where amateur fishing is allowed - in Europe with its main rivers, the Aoos and the Voidomatis. It is an experience certainly unprecedented for many and indeed very relaxing.

2. Cross-country races and cross-country skiing:

Trekking in Mani Mt Taygetos

In recent years mountain running races are starting to have more and more fanatics. There are organized in more and more places such small and big races, but for Zagori this sport officially started in 2011 in the Tymfi massif, some of you may already know it as Zagori Mountain Running.

In addition, the extensive massif of Tymfi is a suitable field for winter sports and especially for alpine skiing. But you can practice first at the Vasilitsa National Ski Center and at the Metsovo and Anilio Ski Centers before trying it yourself.

3. Speleology

With 300 recorded cave caves, the Karst complex of Tymfi with the plateau of Stouros are the perfect field for sports caving. One of those that has been fully explored is the "Sheep" chasm, while others have either not been explored at all or only partially. It pays to be one of those who have gone through this exploration, don't you agree?

4. Kayaking and rafting:

 Active Culture

For the end, we left the most well-known and everyone's favorite sports, kayaking and rafting. Voidomatis and Aoos are probably the best rivers for kayaking and rafting. Kayaking may be more difficult than white water rafting at first as it has a more athletic character and requires experience and autonomy, unlike white water rafting which can be taken up after a short familiarization with it. Either one or the other you choose, the experience and energy you will receive will surely make you remember this excursion for a long time.
