Travel to Kerkini, a natural spectacle
In the northern part of the prefecture of Serres, a stone's throw from the Bulgarian border and between the mountains of Beles and Mavrovouni, lies Lake Kerkini, an artificial lake of unsurpassed natural beauty and a wetland of unique and rare biodiversity. The national park of Kerkini, which is part of the 10 Greek wetlands of international importance and is protected by the Ramsar International Treaty, is a paradise setting and a dream haven for thousands of species of rare flora and fauna, as well as a fragile and, at the same time, dynamic environment which excites all the nature lovers.
Starting from the homonymous village, Kerkini, the Wetland Information Center becomes the starting point for a journey of acquaintance with a wetland of great importance, which through a multitude of activities introduces every visitor to the natural paradise of the lake.
Thousands of species of rare birds nest in the reeds and in the riparian forest with aquatic plants, wild willows and thousands of water lilies, which adorn Kerkini, while in the lakeside meadows, impressive buffaloes enjoy the tranquility of the area, swimming in the waters of the lake. Delicate flamingos, pelicans and swamp ducks flutter among the foliage of the trees as visitors roam the area, through paths along the Kerkini or with the wooden dams that cross the lake. Dirt trails in the embankments of Kerkini offer the possibility of watching the rare birds, while hiking and photo tours, in selected parts of the national park, will capture the dazzling beauty and harmony of the landscape. Finally, the enjoyable panorama of the lake from the picturesque Lithotopos and an excursion to nearby and beautiful traditional settlements, such as Ano and Kato Poria, will ideally complete a journey that has managed to captivate all the senses.
Food and local cuisine
The local cuisine offers a wide range of specialties with local products of excellent quality. Starring buffalo meat and milk, used in various preparations. Cooked in the hull, meat of the hour, sausages and kavourmas are pioneers in the local gastronomic scene, as well as a wide variety of lake fish. The cheese and dairy products of the area are excellent from buffalo meat, while the cauldron dip will excite you.

Transportation in Kerkini
Go by car through the provincial road Thessaloniki - Kilkis-Serres or the EO Thessaloniki - Serres to the intersection of Strymonikos and from there left to Kerkini. By intercity KTEL buses travel to Heraklia and Sidirokastro and then by road to your destination.
Public Transportation
The wet habitat of Kerkini enables movement in various ways. Organized excursions with 4x4 jeeps, horse riding, canoeing, cycling and boating in the waters of the lake, are combined with beautiful walking routes.
