Itinerary
ILMA
With the highest ratio of space per guest at sea, Ilma features just 228 airy, light-filled suites, all with private terraces. Five restaurants, six bars and a wine vault offer culinary experiences to please every palate. The yacht’s aft Marina includes expansive spaces where you can dine alfresco while admiring the seascapes or enjoy watersports directly from the yacht.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Dutch capital is one of Europe’s best-preserved cities – with 60 miles of canals and nearly 7,000 buildings dating from the 18th century or earlier. A good way to see the narrow shop houses is on a canal cruise. Consider a canal tour that includes the poignant Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht Canal. Amsterdam is an art lover’s city with over 70 museums, the best known being the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, considered a national treasure for its collection of masterworks by Rembrandt, Vermeer and others. Don’t miss a trip to Zaanse Schans, a picturesque village of windmills, factories and workshops giving a glimpse of what it was like to live in the Netherlands in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Bergen, Norway
Surrounded by a ring of hills known as the Seven Mountains, Bergen’s idyllic setting and stunning natural harbor have cemented its reputation as one of Norway’s most beloved destinations. The Bergen Cable Car and Fløibanen Funicular are great ways to admire the area’s natural beauty, as is a boat trip along the phenomenal fjords. For breathtaking views of the city itself, climb to the top of Rosenkrantz Tower, regarded as one of the most important Renaissance monuments in Norway. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the historic wharf of Bryggen recalls the town’s heyday in the Hanseatic League, and the charming alleyways are filled with colorful restaurants, studios and boutiques. There is an entire museum dedicated to Bergen’s Hanseatic history, and the Old Bergen Museum illuminates 19th-century life here. For all things artistic, the ensemble of museums known as Kode features collections ranging from works by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch to the home of composer Edvard Grieg, a Bergen native.
Stavanger, Norway
Tracing its roots as far back as the 12th century, Stavanger is one of the oldest communities in Norway. With one of the few urban centers in the region not destroyed by fires or World War II, Stavanger has retained a wealth of historic treasures to explore. With its plentiful music venues, international festivals and museums featuring everything from Vikings to sardines, the city is also a vibrant cultural hub. Gamle Stavanger, with its cobbled streets and beautifully preserved 18th-century homes, is one the largest surviving settlements of wooden houses in northern Europe. A short walk away, the 12th-century Stavanger Cathedral stands in likewise pristine condition. For all of Stavanger’s charms, its most popular attraction stretches for 26 miles beyond the town – the vivid blue waters of Lysefjord bordered by cliffs soaring to heights of 3,300 feet. On a boat tour through the majestic fjord, be sure to watch for the massive granite plateau of Pulpit Rock overhead.
Kristiansund, Norway
Spread across four scenic islands, Kristiansund is known for its picturesque seascapes and rich maritime history. Named Norway’s Engineering Feat of the Century, the Atlantic Ocean Road emerges from an undersea tunnel here to weave dramatically over undulating bridges and across tiny islets for one of the world’s most beautiful drives. Lookout points along the way let you stop at coastal pathways for views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. The road leads to some of the region’s most interesting sights, such as the intricately carved Kvernes Stave Church and the Bergtatt Marble Caves, where you can raft through illuminated underground caverns created by mineral excavation. For a view from the sea, sail a replica Viking ship to an 18th-century fishing village or explore the islands on the Sundbåten ferry, the world’s oldest public transport in continuous use. In town, discover Kristiansund’s nautical heritage in the historic shipyard of Mellemværftet and the Norwegian Klipfish Museum.
Oslo, Norway
Oslo, Norway’s capital, lies on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It is at this headland that you’ll find the famous Oslo Opera House, its roof sloping toward the waterfront. Two parks not to be missed are Vigeland Park, the world’s largest sculpture park made by a single artist, and Ekebergparken, a sculpture and heritage park surrounded by beautiful scenery and spectacular lookout points. Consider a tour of the peninsula of Bygdøy, where you can visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Viking Ship Museum and the Holmenkollbakken ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. Also save time to shop and dine in the hip Aker Brygge district, walking distance from the port.
Gothenburg, Sweden
Gothenburg, located on Sweden’s west coast, is the country’s second largest city and an important trading center. Start your explorations with a stroll down the cobblestone streets of the Haga district. The main street, Haga Nygata, is for pedestrians only and is lined with cafés and artisan shops. A must-see is the Feskekorka fish market. Meaning “Fish Church,” Feskekorka was built in 1874 to resemble a church and is a mecca for seafood lovers. For car buffs, there’s the Volvo Museum, and for thrill-seekers, the Liseberg amusement park. Join the locals on a day trip by ferry to the Southern Archipelago and take in the beautiful scenery. These islands are free of cars and thus perfect for walking and biking.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Perched upon a rock in the harbor, the Little Mermaid welcomes all to this lively, fun-loving city of Danes, said to be some of the happiest people in the world. From the fabulous food and fresh water to free education, free healthcare and a 37-hour work week, this is a society firmly focused on the good life, and its capital is a joy to explore. From an outstanding assembly of modern architecture, world-class museums and charming canals to the lively streets of the Old Town that wind through the world’s oldest kingdom, Copenhagen has it all – not to mention 15 Michelin-starred restaurants and the Stroget, the world’s longest pedestrian shopping street offering the very best in Scandinavian design.
