The Early Christian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki are outstanding examples of architecture and art that greatly influenced Christianity in the Balkans and beyond. Kavala, the capital and main port of the prefecture is amphitheatrically built on the slopes of Mt. Symvolo, forming one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. The city’s breeze sweeps through its historic buildings, which perfectly reflect the city’s modern character. Xanthi, the noble Lady of Thrace, is amphitheatrically built on the foot of Rodopi mountain chain, located in Thrace (Northern Greece), the crossroads of the Black Sea and the Aegean, Europe and Asia.

Itinerary
Arrival to Thessaloniki : city tour - Amphipolis - Kavala
Arrival at “Makedonia” airport Thessaloniki. We begin with a Panoramic tour of the city that throughout the era of the Byzantine Empire was the “co-reigning” city, second in population and prestige after Istanbul. Visit unique monuments and feel the glorious Byzantine past in some of the oldest and most characteristic churches of the Christian world Visit the best sites that represent the historical and cultural significance of Thessaloniki. These sites include the White Tower, the Old city in the upper part of Thessaloniki, the Saint Demetrios Church and many others.
We continue to Amphipolis.
Dinner and overnight in Kavala.
Kavala city tour – Philippi
Panoramic tour of the city of Kavala. An important Roman city and later a Byzantine fortress. The town is famous for its large aqua duct which was rebuilt by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
We continue to Philippi and its museum. This was an important early Christian center, right up to the 14th century. Remains here include an early Christian basilica and a good stretch of the Via Egnatia.
Dinner and overnight in Kavala.
Nestos - Xanthi
Buffet breakfast and departure for Nestos river. We explore the city of Abdera, once an important member of the Athenian Alliance. The city was heavily involved in the politics of the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars.
Return to Xanthi. After lunch we explore the picturesque old town, once an important trading city, which played a big part in the wealthy Balkan. Dinner and overnight at Xanthi.

Breakfast - Depending on the flight schedule, departure transfer to Thessaloniki airport with English speaking assistant.
