The most important monuments of the archeological site are the ancient Roman theater, which is considered one of the largest in antiquity, the Sanctuary of Athena of Chalkioiko, the so-called circular building, relics of shops and a Basilica of the middle Byzantine years.
The majestic and imposing bronze statue of the king of Sparta, erected there in 1969, is the trademark of Sparta.
Perched on the slope of Taygetos, 5km. from the city of Sparta, is Mystras, the ruined Byzantine state, which silently overlooks the city of Sparta. During its heyday, it was the spiritual and cultural center of the region.
