Nestos River
The Nestos River, one of the five largest rivers in Greece, stands out from the rest of the flowing water world with its distinctive character. According to mythology, it is considered the son of Oceanus and Tethys, surpassing human history with its preexistence. While Nestos flows calmly in its large sections, it radiates a sense of grandeur. From its narrow stretches to the wider sections, the river's flow alternates, hiding behind dense vegetation or the shade of thick forests, while reflecting the sunlight, transforming the natural landscape with its stunning color combinations.
Nestos begins its journey from Rila Mountain in Bulgaria and traverses 243 kilometers, affecting the borders of Macedonia and Thrace. Its delta, covering an area of 550,000 acres, is an important international wetland. This natural environment includes the National Park with the Vistonida and Ismarida lakes, along with the lush world of Kotza Orman Forest, also known as the Great Forest.
The Narrows of Nestos, also known as Thracean Tempe, constitute the narrowest point of the river. This area, spanning 23,800 acres, has been designated as an "Aesthetic Forest." The view from the top of Karpuzi is an absolutely stunning experience. The journey along the Nestos offers a unique experience, while changes in the landscape create magical scenes. Finally, kayaking down the river is an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages, offering unforgettable moments and impressions.
Mountain Range of Rhodope
The Rhodope Mountain Range extends mainly in northeastern Greece and the southeastern part of Bulgaria. This mountain range forms a border between the two countries.
In the Greek part, the Rhodope Mountains include Mount Falakro, which is the highest and most impressive peak. The Rhodope offers stunning landscapes, with dense forests, rivers, and waterfalls. It is also known for its rich vegetation and diverse wildlife.
