Athens (Piraeus), Greece
Athens is the cradle of the Western democratic tradition, home to a civilization as radiant as any before or since. Feel the pulse of history as you climb to the hilltop Acropolis, home to some of the city’s most renowned ancient sites. Gaze in amazement at the massive columns of the Parthenon, Pericles' greatest monument. Admire the little Temple of Nike and the fantastic carvings of the caryatids that support a porch of the Erechtheion. At the bottom of the hill, the Acropolis Museum includes original statues of the maidens and numerous other artifacts unearthed here. Equally outstanding is the National Archaeological Museum, one of the largest in the world. In the Agora, you can walk in the footsteps of Plato and Aristotle, carry on an imaginary dialogue with Socrates and discover where Hippocrates healed and Pericles ruled. Then for lighter fare, savor the lively tavernas and twisting lanes of the Plaka neighborhood.
Skiathos, Greece
Some may recognize Skiathos as a setting in the movie Mamma Mia! — which gives you an idea of how scenic this island is. The coastline is home to some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches, and that says a lot given this is the Greek Isles. Only accessible by boat, Lalaria is a favorite because of the soaring white cliffs that rise from the pebbly sands and the striking rock formations jutting into the sea. Koukounaries provides a contrast with silky sands, a backdrop of emerald pines and plenty of loungers and umbrellas. If you prefer history to beaches, visit the Evangelistria Monastery, once a refuge for freedom fighters, or the home of island native and literary giant Alexandros Papadiamantis. Perhaps the nicest thing about Skiathos is that you can spend an immensely enjoyable day simply wandering the charming whitewashed streets, shopping for local honey or olive oil, and sampling food and wine made with fresh ingredients produced here.
Bozcaada, Turkey
Often referred to as ‘Turkey’s Best Kept Secret’, the windswept island of Bozcaada has a decidedly unhurried vibe. Draped in vineyards and adorned with deserted beaches, it luxuriates in its easy-going Aegean attitude. Spend a contented morning wandering through the cobblestoned streets of the Greek Quarter or climbing up to the port’s enormous medieval castle, which is one of the largest citadels in the Aegean. Watch the fishermen haul in their daily catch, sample the local wines at the Amadeus or Corvus Vineyards, or simply opt for some down-time on a secluded beach. At the end of the day, retire to a quaint taverna and sample the local sardines cooked in vine leaves. They taste even better when they’re washed down with one of the island’s local vintages.
Istanbul, Turkey
Beautiful and bold, Istanbul stands astride the continents of Europe and Asia. Start your day with a silky Turkish coffee before making your way to the Byzantine basilica of Haghia Sophia. With its gold mosaics and awe-inspiring dome, this is one of the world’s most beautiful buildings. Follow this with a visit to the Blue Mosque, the grand project of Sultan Ahmet I, and a tour of the harem at the opulent Topkapi Palace. In the afternoon, take a boat trip between Europe and Asia or practice your haggling skills at the colorful Grand Bazaar. Bring your day to a close in a chic rooftop bar in the Beyoğlu district. The bars at 360 and 5. Kat boast stylish dining options and some amazing views over the Bosphorus.
Mykonos, Greece
Bronze bodies bask in the sun on golden beaches, blue-domed churches dot the island, and picturesque windmills paddle the horizon. This is Mykonos, one of the most charming and fashionable of the Greek isles. Chora, its capital, is a cubist jumble of whitewashed houses and a maze of alleyways built long ago to foil pirates. Get lost in these narrow, twisting lanes filled with exclusive boutiques, art galleries and world-class restaurants. Take a 4x4 to explore the hidden corners of this stunning Cycladic island, or take a short boat trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Delos, a sacred islet of ancient ruins and the mythological birthplace of the twins Apollo and Artemis.
Syros, Greece
A study in contrasts, the Greek island of Syros is as historic as it is modern, as Catholic as Orthodox, and as stately and traditional as it is hip and cosmopolitan. The capital of the Cyclades, the island is known for its own intriguing capital, the thriving port city of Ermoupoli. Ermoupoli is crowned by the bright blue dome of the Orthodox church and paved with marble flagstones that line the main square. The nearby Apollon Theater, inspired by the architecture of Milan’s La Scala, represents the city’s remarkable cultural renaissance in the 19th century, while the bordering beaches offer everything from cafés and restaurants to artisanal shops and a casino housed in a mansion from the 1830s. For a more serene perspective, the medieval village of Ano Syros lies just up the hill from Ermoupoli. From the hilltop Catholic Church of Saint George, Ano Syros offers scenic views of the coastline and the bustling capital city below.
Hydra, Greece
Off the southernmost reaches of the Argolis peninsula, the island of Hydra is renowned as a boater’s paradise and a rare car-free destination. Hydra Town rises up the hillsides that surround the u-shaped harbor like an amphitheater, its aquatic stage flanked by cannons. Donkeys are the lone form of transportation up the steep cobblestone lanes, as even scooters and bicycles are banned. The waterfront area is the island’s center for shopping, dining, nightlife and maritime traffic. The town also features art, history and cultural museums housed in converted 18th-century stone mansions. But the main attractions are the seas and beaches that range from Hydronéta, tucked under the town bastions, to sandy Ayios Nikolaos, accessible only by water taxi or private vessel. Outside of town, the island is rugged, topped by Mount Eros, with only trails and footpaths crossing the mountainous interior.
